#020 Video Interviews 2024: What Recruiters Want You to Know | 8 Dos and 2 Don’ts

The year 2024 will remain big on video interviews, so it is crucial to take care of certain things while you are on a video call. Today, you will walk away with 8 Dos and 2 Don’ts when it comes to excelling in video interviews to get your desired job.

 Let's start with 8 Dos.

1.    I would highly recommend making yourself familiar with the app’s interface well ahead of time for chatting or sharing screens with an interviewer. The app could be MS Teams, Google Meet, or Zoom.

2.   Test your audio and video setup at least an hour in advance to ensure your camera and audio are working fine. This gives you enough time to address any unexpected technical issues so that you don’t get into any last-minute panic situations.

3.    Always log in 5 minutes early to the video call to show your punctuality and enthusiasm for the job. It is strongly recommended that you log in to a video call before an interviewer logs in.

4.    Make sure you sit in proper lighting and not in the dark and have clean and noise-free surroundings.

5.    Dress professionally and sit upright to show confidence.

6.   Make sure you look directly into the camera lens. This gives the impression that you are speaking directly to the interviewer. Plus, you would be less distracted by not looking at your laptop’s screen.

7.    Listen actively and engage with your interviewer' by nodding your head and smiling occasionally.

8.   Last but not least, put your cell phone in silent mode and turn off all your laptop apps or mute them to avoid any distractions.

On the other hand, there are two things that you should not do while on video calls

1.    Do not join the call on a mobile device as they often have limited features, such as you might struggle with sharing screens or accessing other functionalities simultaneously.

Plus, the smaller screen size can affect the visibility of content and make it challenging to view all participants at once during a video call.

Not only this but holding the mobile in hand would also make the video shaky.

2.    Avoid reading directly from your laptop screen. Let me tell you, I caught some candidates when I saw their eyeballs moving from left to right and right to left or when they started looking at their screen while responding.

I could easily make out that they were reading instead of speaking from their thoughts. So, never do such a thing as it could be a deal breaker.

I hope this helps!
