What does layoff mean and how it is different from getting fired?

Let me explain that to you in simple terms. 

In a layoff, employees generally lose their jobs for business reasons unrelated to their performance. 

Majority of the time layoffs happen when a company is trying to cut costs, reduce the staff, or handle mergers and acquisitions, 

whereas employees get fired when they are consistently performing poorly or if they have unacceptable behavioral issues.
